7:09pm, pacific standard time, hotel in Palm Desert, California, USA, Tuesday evening, February 28, 2023. Took care of closing out utilities for the Arizona apartment this morning. Luckily, it was easier than I anticipated so, my stress was reduced a little. I also priced out transportation companies today. Unfortunately, the move is going to cost more than I expected, which strains finances in a number of ways. Lastly, I compiled tax documents this afternoon in preparation for filing next month. If all goes well I won’t owe very much. It has been an interesting year financially. I spent a lot of money on things I didn’t foresee. Hopefully, once all is settled in Orange County the major expenses will be taken care of and I can rebuild my savings.
Month: February 2023
Accept the outcome
6:39pm, pacific standard time, hotel in Palm Desert, California, USA, Monday night, February 27, 2023. I am interviewing a candidate for the director position Thursday. All signs indicate go. In that case, she would most likely would be in place the beginning of April. I then would move on to my next assignment. Change would be good. I have been in Palm Desert four months now. They need someone permanent. And, truth be told, I need something more temporary. No complaints though, it has been a good experience. Whatever the future brings I accept the outcome and will work my hardest to be successful.
Apartment packed up
9:18pm, mountain standard time, apartment in Chandler, Arizona, USA, Sunday night, February 26, 2023. The apartment is packed up and I sent information to the movers for an official quote. In two weeks I will move out, give up the keys and say goodbye. At this point, I am ready. I feel like I have said goodbye a thousand times. There is only so much nostalgia one can feel before it becomes redundant. Maybe I will come back to visit. Perhaps I will one day return. Or who knows, I might never be back. Regardless of my fate, I go forward with the lessons I learned these past two years. And for that I am thankful.
Getting closer to finishing the move from Arizona
6:33pm, mountain standard time, apartment in Chandler, Arizona, USA, Saturday evening, February 25, 2023. Finally have a grip on the move. The last week was stressful, worrying about getting my stuff out of the apartment in Chandler and back to Orange County. Now, I am done organizing. At this point, I am throwing everything in a box that fits in a box. I can sort it out when I get to Dana Point. I also reached out to a moving company this afternoon. My daughter’s mom used them back in November. They are based out of Orange County but move nationally as well. She said they are good and reasonably priced; which are two important factors in my decision. The plan is to book an appointment for Saturday, March 11 and get everything out that weekend. After that, I will turn in my keys and complete the final inspection. Time for this move to be over.
Back to Arizona and the move
6:52pm, mountain standard time, apartment in Chandler, Arizona, Friday night, February 24, 2023. I am in Arizona, sitting amongst boxes and bins, watching hockey and drinking beer. By the end of the weekend movers will be booked and a pack out date will be set. It is sad to leave Arizona but, I won’t miss the process of moving. Side note: I got back to the hotel at 10:45pm last night. The roads in the hi-desert were icy but, the snow wasn’t too deep. Not fun to drive on but we made it safely and the patient is doing well on service.

A long night
7:23pm, pacific standard time, hotel in Palm Desert, California, USA, Thursday night, February 23, 2023. An admission was scheduled for this afternoon, dependent on when a certain patient came home from the hospital. Ten minutes before 5pm, the on call nurse texted me, saying she couldn’t make the visit. Inclement weather had her stuck in the hi-desert. Long story short, rather than cancel the admission, I drove an hour up the hill to get the her, turned around, then drove an hour back down the mountain and dropped her off at the appointment. Now, after a quick dinner, I am going to pick her up at the patient’s home and take her back to Yucca Valley. Then, I am going to turn around and come back to Palm Desert. Hopefully, I will be in bed by 10:30pm. It has been a long night already.
Meetings done
6:11pm, pacific standard time, hotel in Palm Desert, California, USA, Wednesday evening, February 22, 2023. Had three meetings today. Meetings that I organized and conducted. Which meant lots of preparation and stress. Now that they are over I am relaxed. And good news; the regional director in town said she can cover the branch Friday afternoon. That means I can leave for Arizona early. I have most of the apartment packed up but, having an extra day makes it easier to finish what I need to.
Palm desert again
6:29pm, pacific standard time, hotel in Palm Desert, California, USA, Tuesday evening, February, 21, 2023. Took my daughter to school this morning. Then I unloaded the car at the Dana Point apartment and answered emails. Shortly after noon, I headed east and came back to Palm Desert. For a second, it felt like I hadn’t been here for a while. Then I remembered: I drove through Palm Desert yesterday, and even stopped for a short break! I have been driving so much I am losing track of where I have been and when. For the rest of this week I am staying out here then heading back to Chandler for more packing and moving.
Birthday 2023
8:53pm, pacific standard time, apartment in Aliso Viejo, California, USA, Monday night, February 20, 2023, my birthday. Had a good day. Drove in from Arizona this afternoon, went to a movie with my daughter, then out to dinner as a family. We visited a tepanyaki grill and got ice cream cake after. Tomorrow I will go to Palm Desert for work then head back to Arizona to pack more stuff.
The daybed saga
5:22pm, mountain standard time, apartment in Chandler, Arizona, USA, Sunday evening, February 19, 2023. Had the daybed sold this afternoon. A couple expressed interest, we agreed on a price, they came to pick it up and the transaction was going smooth. Money even exchanged hands. The trundle was loaded on their trailer. All that was left was the actual frame and mattress. That’s when we realized the movers from two years ago stripped all the bolts on the frame. No matter how hard we tried, the fastens wouldn’t loosen and the frame remained intact. It was too big to fit out the doorway. The deal fell through and, even worse, I had no way to get the frame out of the apartment, let alone sell it. But, I am proud to say, with a little effort, a hammer, some pliers and a hour of sweat equity, I removed the stripped bolts and broke down the frame. I will go to the hardware store and buy replacements. Maybe then I can try and sell it again next weekend. For most people addressing such a situation might not mean much but, with my limited skills, it was an accomplishment I feel proud to have achieved.
