6:15pm, pacific standard time, hotel in Palm Desert, California, USA, Tuesday evening, November 1, 2022. First day of the new assignment. There is a lot of information to digest. It isn’t so much there are more problems than Dublin, just the mood of the site is bleak. The first order of business is to get the energy turned around. Halloween yesterday was fun. We didn’t stay out too late but did manage to get some good candy. It was nice to have the extra day to spend with my daughter and take her to school a couple times.

Halloween 2022
4:54pm, pacific standard time, apartment in Dana Point, California, USA, October 31, 2022, Halloween. Took my daughter to school this morning, did a couple of calls for work, got a haircut, exercised in the afternoon, then picked my daughter up. Now we are getting ready to visit friend’s for pizza dinner and trick-or-treating. I am wearing the shirt I bought for the party last Saturday. Happy Halloween 🎃

At the Salt Lake City airport
3:17pm, mountain standard time, Salt Lake City International Airport, Salt Lake City, Utah, Sunday afternoon, October 30, 2022. Today is the thirteen year anniversary of my last day as a full time hospice chaplain. The party last night was to be with co-workers from that era. Unfortunately, two couldn’t make it and one has a serious illness. Consequently, it was not the reunion anticipated. Still, it was nice to see old friends and a few long forgotten acquaintances. Now, after a farewell lunch with my mom, I am at the airport, traveling back to Orange County to spend Halloween with my daughter.

Killing time before the party
6:06pm, mountain standard time, parking lot in Ogden, Utah. Drove to Utah with my mom to attend a wedding reception/Halloween party for an old work friend. On the way we stopped at a costume store in Ogden to buy a t-shirt so I have something a little festive. The party doesn’t start until 7pm so we are waiting and killing time scrolling on our phones and talking.
Reconnecting
6:17pm, pacific standard time, hotel in Dublin, California, USA, Tuesday night, October 25, 2022. Spent the day training the new executive director and finishing up last minute issues with payroll. Tomorrow is my final full day in Dublin. On Thursday, I fly to Salt Lake City to visit my mom and attend my previous supervisors wedding reception/Halloween party. I look forward connecting with friends and seeing my mom again. It has been over five years since I saw my old coworkers and almost six months since my mom visited me in Arizona.
Quick nap
4:04pm, pacific standard time, apartment in Dana Point, California, USA, Friday afternoon, September, 23, 2022. Going to the amusement park for an early Halloween celebration this evening. We won’t be home until late. I flew in from the Bay Area this afternoon after working at the hotel this morning. I am going to take a quick nap before we head out at 5:30pm.
Resin ghost with lantern
8:52pm, pacific standard time, apartment in Chandler, Arizona, USA, Thursday night, July 14, 2022. Drove to north Phoenix twice today trying to locate a Halloween decoration for a friend. Apparently it is the hot item this year and almost completely sold out. Never mind the fact it is only July! Anyway, after a week of visiting multiple stores and calling countless others, my quest was successful.

Halloween fun
11:23am Saturday. We walked in the door at 3am this morning. Last night was epic. First the party started at 6pm. With dinner, heavy traffic, finding a car space and meeting up with other guests we didn’t enter the park until 9pm. By then it was packed with people. Waits for rides topped two and a half hours. At midnight we walked one of the Halloween attractions. After that we were tired. It was a rush to get everyone home before falling asleep. My daughter is still asleep. I woke up to take the dog out and have been watching football.
Friday
8:09am Friday, Dana Point. Today is the day my daughter and I are going to the amusement park for Halloween. She is going with friends, I as a chaperone of sorts. I look forward to it. October is the best month of the year; it has fall weather, Halloween and leads directly into two more months of holidays.
Vacation
6:14am Thursday. Soon after dinner last night I fell asleep on the couch at my wife’s house. It was a deep, luxurious slumber filled with peacefully confusing images and happy childhood memories. The kind of sleep I rarely achieve during the hustle of life in Arizona. It happened right before evening. There were still some streaks of light in the sky but we had pulled the blinds and turned on a lamp or two. Once the house was settled my daughter began watching a Halloween movie. I don’t remember the plot but it had something to do with a secret society of teenagers battling an evil carnival. Shortly after it started I became extremely tired. The sounds of a full house, the smell of chicken soup emanating from the kitchen mingled in my brain and put me at ease. My eyelids grew heavy and I curled up on the side of the couch. Before long I was snoring softly. My daughter was surprised. She implored me to wake up, stressing it was barely eight o’clock. But I couldn’t be roused. The release of stress starting vacation and the sense of being home had emptied me out. I stayed there on the couch all night. Sleeping my peaceful sleep, dreaming my quiet dreams until the dog whined to be let out ten hours later.
