Saturday, June 11

5:33pm, pacific standard time, Dana Point, California, USA, Saturday evening, June 11, 2022. Had a day at the park with acquaintances to celebrate our daughter’s 8th grade promotion. Last night, a couple of friends stayed the night. The apartment was so full I slept on a blow up mattress in the dining area. Now, my daughter has a friend over to watch anime. We will leave soon to grab dinner and take the friend home.

Clarity coming

3:59pm, pacific standard time, apartment in Chandler, Arizona, USA, Friday afternoon, June 3, 2022. The people from San Diego reached out today. Weirdest thing; they insinuated an offer would be made, but didn’t make one. Not sure what the hold up may be, guess I will find out next week. The recruiter for the Senior leadership job in Orange County touched base again. I don’t think that is a job worth pursuing, for many reasons. Finally, the position I find most intriguing, the support for the electronic medical record company, also reached out today. We set up an interview time for Monday morning. Things are starting to come together. Next week should provide clarity.

Memorial Day 2022

4:27pm, pacific standard time, apartment in Chandler, Arizona, USA, Monday afternoon, May 30, 2022, Memorial Day. Left Orange County early to beat traffic but, it wasn’t necessary. In fact, it was the fastest trip across the desert so far. I even had time for a quick nap afterwards. My mom sent pictures of the graves in Wyoming this morning. Everything looks nice. She always does a good job. Seeing the pictures brought back fond memories of my brother and dad.

Arrived in Dana Point

5:04pm, pacific standard time, post office parking lot, Dana Point, California, USA, Friday evening, May 27, 2022. Decided to leave early for California to beat holiday traffic. Came through San Diego, which was actually faster this time. I told everyone I was getting in around seven. For some reason I don’t want to show up early. Maybe I will try and get a haircut.

I remain open to anything

3:11pm, pacific standard time, parking lot, Phoenix, Arizona, USA, Thursday afternoon, May 26, 2022. The meeting about severance with the previous company went well. I will have the document reviewed just to be sure but, it does help bridge the gap. Also, the interview in Glendale was positive this afternoon. It is a fast growing start up company. The opportunity is excellent but, the position won’t be available until August. That is too far away to be an option for me. I have one more virtual meeting today at 5pm. From what I gather it is with a senior living company in Orange County, California starting their own hospice. It might be a bootstrap operation for a while. Not sure how it will go but, I remain open to anything.

Job updates, Wednesday, May 25

3:28pm, pacific standard time, apartment in Chandler, Arizona, USA, Wednesday afternoon, May 25, 2022. Busy day today; finally have a meeting tomorrow morning to discuss my severance with the previous company. After that, I drive to Glendale for an in-person interview to explore the Senior Leadership position I was contacted for yesterday. Finally, I have a virtual interview with a hospice in Orange County, California tomorrow evening at 5pm. A lot of options available, now it is time to see which is the best one.

Dana Point Saturday May 21

4:56pm, pacific standard time, apartment in Dana Point, California, USA, Saturday afternoon, May21, 2022. Drove into Orange County this morning at 11am, got the mail and picked up lunch. When I arrived at the apartment there were dishes cluttered on the counter and around the sink. I spent time rinsing, sorting and scrubbing various plates and glasses before loading the dishwasher. In the afternoon we went to the store for groceries and bought a new game. It was fun to try something different. Now we are taking a break and cooling off. I will get up shortly and begin prepping for dinner.

Layoffs

5:42, pacific standard time, apartment in Chandler, Arizona, USA, Thursday morning, May 12, 2022. Since this past weekend I have felt a unique sense of peace. Ironically, it is because I half-thought I would lose my job on Monday. The worksite has not been doing well for some time and, as the leader, responsibility ultimately falls on me. Hence, the stress of being relieved of my position is ever constant. To protect my psyche I began cataloguing possible benefits of not working; I could enjoy the trip back to Utah/Wyoming with my mom tomorrow, appreciate a relaxing week in Arizona when I return, then travel to Orange County, spend time with my daughter, and not rush back to a dreaded Monday. Those thoughts have buoyed me through the week. But, yesterday after work, the regional supervisor texted me and said she would be in the office this morning at 9am to layoff staff. I honestly don’t know if I will be one of the casualties. Either way, If I am let go or not, people I have worked with for over a year will lose their jobs today. And there is no amount of mental gymnastics I can do to make that situation feel good.

Life is like surfing

8:14am, pacific standard time, apartment in Dana Point, California, USA, Friday morning, April 22, 2022, day 8 of vacation (Earth Day) Life is like surfing; waking up alone on a cold, gray morning, leaving valuables behind, and running barefoot across endless shifting ground to the waters edge. Though rocks are sharp and the water is cold, the roiling expanse is met with confidence. After all, why would there be reason to doubt? Nothing has pierced our belief that all ends up working out for the best. Yet, inevitably, disappointment arrives; waves don’t break like they should, other surfers knock us down and the wind howls mercilessly in our ears. At that point, it is natural to feel tested and beaten. Yet, at the lowest moment, with only a little time left, it only takes one amazing wave to change everything. Life, like surfing, is beautiful; not because every moment is perfect but, rather, because so few truly are.

Day six of vacation

8:53am, pacific standard time, apartment in Dana Point, California, USA, Wednesday morning, April 20, 2022, day six of vacation. We got back home from the theme park last night just before ten pm and went to bed shortly thereafter. The trip was exhausting but, overall, extremely fun. I had a generalized plan to sleep in this morning but, our dog was eager wake up and explore; probably because we missed our walk yesterday. I did make the decision to cut the walk short because my legs were still sore. Nonetheless, this morning has been productive. It isn’t 9am yet and I have had two cups of coffee, loaded the dishwasher and started three loads of laundry.
