Sleep and recuperate

2:14pm, pacific standard time, Sacramento, California, USA airport. Thursday afternoon, September 29, 2022. Last night I started feeling under the weather. Rather than go to the office this morning I worked from the hotel, then drove to the Sacramento airport. My flight to San Diego boards soon, then I connect to Phoenix. I should be in my apartment by 8:30pm. I need to sleep the entire weekend and recuperate.

Ready to be over

6:21am, pacific standard time, apartment in Chandler, Arizona, USA, Tuesday evening, June 21, 2022. First interview this morning was interesting. Talked with the company CEO. He asked questions about high school, my brother, parents etc. He seemed more interested in chatting than discussing the job. On one hand it was relaxed but, on the other, not very productive. The second interview today was late afternoon, 3:30pm. It was for the job in Rancho Cucamonga, California . I had low expectations but, turned out to be the best meeting of the day. Still in the initial stages with that one so more to come. The 3rd, and last, interview, was directly after the second. It went alright. A one-on-one with a corporate clinical leader. Not necessarily insightful but, not terrible. For the rest of the week I have; an initial meeting 9am tomorrow with. Recruiter about a position here in Phoenix, a third interview Thursday morning with one of the Riverside groups, and potentially an interview Friday with the other Riverside, California group. To be honest, it is all very confusing, and slightly frustrating. I am ready for the process to be over.

I remain open to anything

3:11pm, pacific standard time, parking lot, Phoenix, Arizona, USA, Thursday afternoon, May 26, 2022. The meeting about severance with the previous company went well. I will have the document reviewed just to be sure but, it does help bridge the gap. Also, the interview in Glendale was positive this afternoon. It is a fast growing start up company. The opportunity is excellent but, the position won’t be available until August. That is too far away to be an option for me. I have one more virtual meeting today at 5pm. From what I gather it is with a senior living company in Orange County, California starting their own hospice. It might be a bootstrap operation for a while. Not sure how it will go but, I remain open to anything.

Layoffs: update

8:31am, pacific standard time, parking lot of of a grocery store in Phoenix, Arizona, USA, Friday morning, May 13, 2022. Yesterday was not fun. Three employees were let go; two office staff, one field clinician. As for me, I was given three options; stay at the current site while accepting a significant cut in salary and title, explore other executive positions with the company out of state or, take a severance package and look for employment elsewhere. I said I needed a day to think about it but I already knew what I was going to do. I will accept the severance and find a new job in Southern California.

Overcoming the fallout

As an adult, I never had debt (except for car and house payments) until the summer 2017. At that point, with a significant amount of money saved up, I quit my corporate job and started a business from home. At first, the decision was exhilarating; I woke up every morning driven by purpose and peered into a future with endless possibility. There was no doubt in my mind; financial independence and peaceful days spent at the beach were just around the corner. But, before long, revenue stagnated and expenses increased. By the end of year one all my cash had run out. To stay afloat I dipped into long held CD’s and mutual funds; not just to support the business, but to cover basic household expenses, like rent and groceries. When that money was gone I took a chunk out of retirement before resorting to unsecured loans and credit card debt. By the time I went back to work I was broke with no savings and over $75,000 in debt. For the past year and a half I have worked to bring that sum under control. There is still a large amount to be paid back but, I am proud to say, it is considerably smaller, and I can see the path out. Ironically, the lesson learned was not achieving financial acumen by growing a successful business but rather, learning how to deal with money by overcoming the fallout of a failed one.

Excited about the possibility

5:29am, pacific standard time, apartment in Chandler, Arizona, USA, Thursday morning, May 5, 2022. At 11am a recruiter is calling me in regards to a job opening in San Diego, California. It would be a lateral move but, things in Phoenix have been stagnate for a while and aren’t getting better any time soon. I am excited about the possibility of taking on a new challenge. A change in scenery can be very reinvigorating.

Departure

Thursday update

Apartment 5:30am, apartment, Chandler, Arizona, Thursday evening, April 14, 2022. I want to quit this job and move on. Things have gone south, they have lost confidence in me. I am not going to win. Another possibility appeared on the walk this morning; stay in Phoenix and become a chaplain. 9:13am office Phoenix. The morning hasn’t been too bad. Getting things done. I am planning on taking pto then resigning on the Monday I come back.

Good morning Phoenix

5:39am, apartment in Chandler, Arizona, Tuesday morning, March 22, 2022. The company is holding a three day sales training at a hotel by the airport in Phoenix this week. It starts this morning at 9:30am. They had a couple of extra spots available and offered them to directors. When I agreed to go I mistakenly thought it was just for one day. When I realized the truth I began to feel stress. Being out of the office three days would put me even further behind. But now that the time has arrived, I am grateful. Since the training starts later, my morning is not rushed. I am going to read a little longer, have an extra cup of coffee and listen to some music. It feels so good to know I don’t have to go to the office. My already late tasks may back up more but, a change in perspective is very much appreciated.

Fast day

3:53pm, in my office, Phoenix, Arizona, Monday afternoon, January 10, 2022. First day of three week training/preparation to integrate with our new company. The training was boring but tolerable, while the day sped by. Or at least it seemed to go faster. Regardless, Monday is almost over and I couldn’t be happier.
